The field is set for New Orleans mayor, City Council, sheriff. See who's running.

Packed council contests

While District B won’t have a race, a slate of familiar political faces, plus a series of political newcomers threw their hats in the ring in two districts that appear poised for competitive cycles: District E and District A.

The 11 candidates running in District E, covering the Lower 9th Ward and New Orleans East, make that race second in size only to the 14-person mayoral field. Thomas is set to leave that seat after a single term as he mounts his run for mayor.

Rep. Jason Hughes, D-New Orleans, will face off in that contest against two former District E Councilmembers trying to win back their old jobs, Cyndi Nguyen and Jon Johnson. All three are Democrats. So is Danyelle Christmas, a dental assistant and political newcomer backed by the local Democratic Socialists of America chapter in that race.

In District A, two former employees of the sitting councilmember, Joe Giarrusso are vying to replace their old boss, who is term-limited. They are Holly Friedman, Giarrusso’s former constituent services director who now works for District Attorney Jason Williams, and Aimee McCarron, Giarrusso's former budget and policy director. Both are Democrats.

Teacher Alex Mossing, another Democrat, qualified Friday to run in District A, which spans portions of Mid City, Lakeview, Hollygrove and Uptown. So did Bridget Neal, a former state employee running as a Republican. Community activist and former council candidate Bob Murrill is also running as a political independent.
