Louisiana qualifying period ends ahead of fall elections
NEW ORLEANS —
Candidates officially began qualifying Wednesday for the upcoming fall election in New Orleans, with the process running through Friday.
Several individuals made their way to the clerk of court's office to add their names to the ballot.
The biggest race being followed in the area is for mayor of New Orleans, where a handful of candidates have already launched their campaigns. Mayor LaToya Cantrell cannot run for re-election because of term limits.

The sheriff's race will be another highly-watched election after 10 inmates escaped the Orleans Parish Jail in May.
Sheriff Susan Hutson suspended her campaign temporarily to focus on the search. One inmate, Derrick Groves, is still on the run. However, Hutson qualified Friday morning after announcing that she is back in the race at a small party Thursday night.
Election day is Oct. 11.
